The Power of Archetypes in Women’s Circles

by Anna H.

Women's circles are, at their heart, spaces of remembering. Remembering ourselves. Remembering the sacred bond of sisterhood. Remembering the many layers of who we are. Working with feminine archetypes in women's circles adds another dimension to this remembering – one that is symbolic, deeply human, and wonderfully intuitive.

Rooted in depth psychology and shaped by thinkers such as Carl Jung and Jean Bolen, archetypal work has gradually found its way into modern women's circles. For those of you interested in how archetypes can start meaningful conversations in circles, here's a little guide.

What exactly are archetypes?

Archetypes are considered universal patterns of energy. Those archetypal images are so deeply rooted in the collective unconscious that we instinctively understand them. Across cultures and time, we've seen those recurring patterns again and again: in myths, stories, psychology, everyday life, and even dreams.

Feminine archetypes, specifically, are ways in which feminine energy is expressed. Yin doesn't show up the same in every woman – there are many forms of expression (and that's the beautiful thing: they're all valid!).

The most common feminine archetypes worked are:

  • The Nurturer
  • The Queen
  • The Maiden
  • The Huntress
  • The Mystic
  • The Sage
  • The Lover

Another popular framework is the Maiden-Mother-Crone arc, which is an ever-repeating cycle, but when it comes to personality, women usually feel more seen working with more than 3 archetypes to represent the multitudes we contain. That's why I'd usually recommend sticking to the 7 archetypes outlined above.

What you should know before working with archetypes

There are a few misconceptions people commonly hold about archetypes, and, as the space-holder of a women's circle, I recommend explaining these before diving deeper.

  1. Archetypes are not personality types, even though they can sound like it at first. A personality type suggests something fixed – this is who you are. Archetypes are dynamic – this is an energy you can access. You carry the potential for all archetypes within you. That's where their real power lies.
  2. Most people resonate strongly with more than one archetype, often 2-3. Your dominant archetype reflects the energy you're currently embodying, while those you connect with less often point to qualities that may still want to be explored and developed.
  3. Archetypes also shift throughout life. Some may accompany you consistently throughout life, while others activate only in certain situations. With awareness, you can even learn to consciously call specific archetypes forward when they're needed.

How to open up the conversation around archetypes

Women's circles are already symbolic spaces, places for profound connection. They are the perfect environment to share in a safe space, and explore the depths of our inner being.

Archetypes work so beautifully in women's circles because they:

  • give language to the unspoken
  • are something we can intuitively relate to
  • help us understand patterns we default to
  • honor different expressions of the feminine
  • connect us to the ancient wisdom we already carry within

One of the most beautiful gateways into archetypal work is art. Displaying illustrated archetypes (you're welcome to share my art; credit is appreciated) in the circle invites an immediate, intuitive response. Before naming or explaining anything, you can simply ask: Which one(s) do you feel drawn to? How do you imagine they move through the world? What strengths or challenges do you sense they carry?

Women often recognize an archetype long before they can explain why. That's the magic of archetypal work – we already know it, on a deeper level.

Once the archetypes have been felt and explored intuitively, you can offer a bit more context – sharing their patterns, qualities, and common expressions. This often helps women put language to something they already sensed.

The circle can then open into sharing. To deepen the reflection, you might invite questions such as:

  • Which archetype do you feel most connected to in this moment?
  • Which archetypes have you already moved through across different seasons of your life? How did they support you?
  • Which archetype feels challenging, and why? What might shift if you allowed yourself to let this energy into your life?
  • What part of yourself feels most seen through this archetype?
  • How does this archetypal energy show up in your relationships/work/daily life?
  • Where might you be over-identifying with this archetype (or holding it back)?
  • What potential gifts or wisdom might be waiting in the shadow of this archetype?
  • What does this archetype ask from you right now so it can be expressed in a more balanced way?
  • If you could honour this archetypal energy more fully, how would that change your life?

Why this work can feel so deeply healing

For many women, archetypal work feels deeply empowering. Archetypes act as mirrors, and recognizing yourself in them can feel like a true homecoming. Like something finally clicking. What once felt like a flaw or pattern you're stuck in suddenly makes sense as part of a shared human experience.

In a circle, this recognition is amplified through witnessing. Sharing our inner experience helps others realize they're not alone. And when we feel safe enough to open up, healing tends to unfold naturally.

Archetypes also act as powerful, vivid reminders of who we can become. They don't just reflect where we are; they point toward what's possible. They show us qualities we may have suppressed or not yet fully embodied, and teach us how to claim them confidently, so we can create the life we desire for ourselves.

Ultimately, they are here give ourselves permission. Permission to be complex, to change, to hold contradictions, and to embody your feminine power unapologetically.

Integrating what emerged in the circle

For many women, recognizing themselves in the archetypes is only the starting point. Taking time to journal, write, or reflect can help anchor what emerged in the circle.

Below are a few helpful resources for circle participants to explore archetypes further at their own pace:

Whether you're guiding circles yourself, or your own curiosity brought you here: If you decide to keep exploring, take your time, and, most importantly, be compassionate with yourself. There's no need to "perfectly embody" anything, or despair over what you haven't integrated yet. Archetypes are here to accompany us through life, inspire us, and help us meet the different parts of ourselves again and again.

We don't have to hold everything alone, so women's circles are a beautiful place to hold conversations around archetypes. So much growth comes from simply allowing ourselves to be seen, sister to sister – and recognizing we already hold so much beauty and potential just as we are.
